Bradwardine, Thomas

Bradwardine, Thomas
(c. 1290–1349)
   Archbishop and Theologian.
Bradwardine was born in Chichester, and was educated at the University of Oxford. He had a distinguished career within the Church, being Chancellor of St Paul’s Cathedral, London, and Confessor to King Edward III; he was consecrated Archbishop of Canterbury in 1349. As well as being a distinguished mathematician, Bradwardine is remembered for his theological writings, particularly his De Causa Dei Contra Pelagium. Against the Pelagian heresy, he maintained that God’s grace was necessary for salvation and that ultimately the cause of all human action is to be found in the will of God. This deterministic position anticipated the predestinarianism of John wycliffe and the sixteenth-century Reformers.
